The GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 quantitative survey aims to capture information about the adolescents in the sample and their caregivers, families and wider communities and continue to monitor changes across the lifespan of the GAGE programme.
The GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 quantitative survey collected data from participating adolescents (‘core respondents’) across research sites in three GAGE study locations (Debre Tabor, South Gondar, and East Hararghe) over several months between early 2021 and mid-2022. Data collection for Round 3 was divided prospectively into two waves in anticipation of a pause around the 2021 Ethiopian general election.
Wave 1 of Round 3 was conducted between March and May 2021 (before the election) in GAGE research sites in Debre Tabor, East Hararghe, and South Gondar. A single survey instrument was used for this wave, the GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 Survey (Wave 1, 2021), Core Respondent Module (a).
Once the 2021 elections had concluded, Wave 2 of the GAGE Round 3 quantitative data collection was launched and spanned October 2021 to May 2022. Different subsamples of adolescents were interviewed in this survey wave, with tailored survey modules designed for each subsample as follows:
Core Respondent Module (b), Debre Tabor: A random sample of 50% of adolescents tracked during the Round 3, Wave 1 data collection in Debre Tabor (stratified by gender and age) were sought to be re-interviewed in Wave 2. The survey module used for this sample is entitled the GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 Survey (Wave 2 – Debre Tabor, 2022).
Core Respondent Module (c), East Hararghe: The remaining 75% of adolescents living in households with a recorded phone number and the remaining 65% of adolescents living in households without a known phone number– none of whom were sought during Wave 1 – were sought to be interviewed in East Hararghe in Wave 2. The survey module used for this sample is entitled the GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 Survey (Wave 2 – East Hararghe, 2021/22).
Core Respondent Module (d), South Gondar: The remaining 75% of adolescents living in households with a recorded phone number and the remaining 65% of adolescents living in households without a known phone number– none of whom were sought during Wave 1 – were sought to be interviewed in South Gondar in Wave 2. The survey module used for this sample is entitled the GAGE Ethiopia Round 3 Survey (Wave 2 – South Gondar, 2022).
Core Respondent Module (e), newly recruited sample of VYA in East Hararghe and South Gondar: GAGE recruited a new sample of VYA (aged 11-13 at the time of data collection) during late 2021 and early 2022 in East Hararghe and South Gondar. As these adolescents were younger than those in the existing GAGE sample, as eparate survey was created to capture information about them and their households.
