Bodily integrity and freedom from violence is recognised as a fundamental human right, yet the violence most commonly experienced by young people – in their homes, schools, and within relationships – is also the least likely to be counted. Because it often occurs behind closed doors, is usually perpetrated by those meant to provide care, and because shame (and fear) limit reporting, violence against young people is both pervasive and systematically underestimated.
